What is it? 

This style of yoga is a slower-paced practice than others and focuses on 12 basic poses, chanting and meditation. 

What does it mean? 

Sivananda is the name of guru from which this style of yoga was founded.

Who founded it? 

Swami Vishnudevandanda founded this style of yoga based on the teachings of Swami Sivananda, whose path was based on four paths and five points which are guiding principals to the practice and path of Sivananda Yoga.

How did it evolve?

Sivananda as a practice and a path of yoga centres around the world, evolved from the teachings of Swami Sivananda who was a medical doctor before renouncing that lifestyle and opening an ashram in Risikesh in 1932. Swami Vishnuvivananda was sent by Swami Sivananda to share yoga with the West in 1957 and through this journey he established the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres in 1959.

What is a class like?

A Sivananda yoga class often starts and finishes with Sun Salutations and Savasana, and run through 12 basic poses and their variations usually for a 90minute class.
